SoloPower recruits VP of research from NREL

SoloPower Inc of San Jose, CA, USA has appointed Dr Rommel Noufi as VP of research. Reporting to chief technology officer Dr Bulent Basol, Noufi will lead research activities geared toward improving the firm’s high-efficiency electroplating-based copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film solar cell technology.

Noufi joins from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) of Golden, CO, where for the last 27 years he carried out R&D and served as principal scientist and group manager, leading CIGS and cadmium telluride-based (CdTe) solar cell research activities that resulted in record power-conversion efficiencies of 19.9% and 16.5%, respectively.

Before NREL and its predecessor organization, the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), Noufi was a senior scientist at Rockwell International Science Center, where he performed research on the photoelectrochemistry of semiconductors, metal oxide electrodeposition and photoelectrochemical solar cells.

Noufi played a key role in the development of CIGS as a photovoltaic material, says Basol, who has known Noufi since he joined SERI in 1980, after which they worked together on Department of Energy-supported solar cell projects.
