Epiwafer foundry VPEC aims to ramp capacity 40-60% in 2010

Taiwanese pure-play epiwafer foundry Visual Photonics Epitaxy Co Ltd (VPEC) is planning to ramp its capacity by 40-60% in 2010 in a bid to become the number two global GaAs wafer foundry, says a report by Digitimes. The capacity increase is to be funded by the issue of 10 million new shares, priced at NT$58 (US$1.79) each. Currently, the top GaAs wafer foundry is UK-based IQE, with US-based Kopin second.

According to Digitimes, in the first of half of 2010, VPEC will increase its number of installed MOCVD tools from 22 to more than 30. In August this year, deposition equipment maker Aixtron AG of Herzogenrath, Germany said that VPEC had ordered two AIX 2600G3 IC MOCVD reactors, to be delivered in Q1/2010 and installed at its production facility in Ping-Jen City, Taoyuan.

VPEC forecasts year-on-year growth of 62% for power amplifier shipments in 2010, which are being boosted by intelligent grid network applications and e-book readers. Also, in Q1/2010, the firm expects its solar wafer business revenue share to reach 5-10% of total revenue. VPEC’s monthly revenue in 2010 is set to increase from NT$100m to NT$300m, concludes the report.
