Semprius raises $6.4m Series B funding for solar module development

Semprius Inc of Durham, NC, USA, which is commercializing a process for printing semiconductors on any substrate (including glass and plastic), has closed a $6.4m Series B round of venture funding from existing investors ARCH Venture Partners, Applied Ventures, Illinois Ventures and Intersouth Partners, joined by new investors In-Q-Tel and GVC Investment Fund.

Semprius claims that its technology enables the placement of nearly any high-performance semiconductor onto any target substrate, broadening the options available to designers of electronic devices and, for many existing designs, enabling faster and less expensive manufacturing. It can be applied to markets including solar modules, electronic displays and wireless devices.

The initial focus is on the production of low-cost, high-performance solar modules for utility-scale power generation. The firm claims that its unique module design and low-cost assembly technology enable energy production at wholesale rates without the need for government subsidies. The funding will be used to complete development and begin field deployment of solar modules to selected customers.

“Our current focus on photovoltaic products for solar modules represents an enormous market opportunity,” says president & CEO Joe Carr. “Semprius has made great progress over the last few years,” adds Kip Frey of Intersouth Partners.
