Avago adds LRM and extended-temperature SR and LR models to SFP+ transceiver family for 10GbE

At this week’s Optical Fiber Communications conference (OFC 2009) in San Diego, Avago Technologies of San Jose, CA, USA has announced the expansion of its family of SFP+ optical transceiver modules for next-generation 10 Gigabit Ethernet equipment designs.

Available now as samples (with general availability by the end of April), the new additions include a 1310nm LRM long-reach multi-mode fiber transceiver, and transceivers for both LR (long-reach) single-mode fiber and SR (short-reach) multi-mode fiber applications with extended temperature capability for enterprise and data-center applications.

“The growing trend towards higher port densities in Ethernet equipment designs places increased constraints on design margins for key performance parameters in optical transceivers,” says Sami Nassar, senior director of marketing, Fiber Optic Product Division. “Avago has widened its 10Gbps SFP+ product family to support legacy multi-mode fiber and extended-temperature transceivers, enabling higher-port-density designs while maintaining high-reliability performance,” he adds.

The AFBR-707SDZ 10Gb/s SPF+ LRM transceiver module incorporates Avago’s 1310nm Fabry-Perot (FP) laser and PIN detector technology to provide an IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet design that’s compliant with the 10GBASE-LRM standard. The transceiver is designed to enable the reuse of installed legacy multi-mode fiber cables to preserve end-user cabling infrastructure.

Other key features include typical power dissipation of 0.8W; a full digital diagnostic management interface (DMI); and Avago’s SFP+ package design, which enables equipment electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance in high-port-density applications with margins to Class B limits. The LRM transceiver supports OM1, OM2, and OM3 multi-mode fiber reaches of up to 220 meters.

The AFCT-701ASDZ 10Gb/s SFP+ LR transceiver incorporates Avago’s 1310nm distributed feedback (DFB) laser and PIN detector technology, offers extended-temperature-range performance and operates over single-mode fiber at distances of up to 10km in compliance with the optical interface specifications per IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-LR. Moreover, it supports an extended case operating temperature range of 0-85 degrees Celsius to enable very high-port-density equipment designs. The AFCT-701ASDZ is an addition to the previously released ACFT-701SDZ, which operates at case temperatures in the commercial range of 0-70 degrees Celsius while maintaining maximum power dissipation of less than 1W.

The extended-temperature AFBR-703ASDZ SFP+ SR transceiver incorporates Avago’s 850nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and PIN detector technology to provide an IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet design that is compliant with the 10GBASE-SR standard. The transceiver is designed with an extended case temperature range of 0-85 degrees Celsius to enable 10 Gigabit Ethernet equipment designs with very high port density. The AFBR-703SDZ commercial-temperature-range transceiver is also available upon request.

Avago’s family of 10 Gigabit Ethernet SPF+ transceivers comply with the electrical interface specifications from SFF-8431 for enhanced 10Gb/s SFP, as well as the SFF-8472 specification for DMI in optical transceivers. All of Avago’s 10Gb/s SPF+ transceivers are RoHS compliant.

Pricing for the AFBR-707SDZ, AFCT-701SDZ/ASDZ, and AFBR-703SDZ/ASDZ 10Gb SFP+ transceivers are $370, $380/$430 and $250/$300, respectively, in minimum quantities of 10.
