Americas to overtake EMEA in free-space optics market, but APAC growing fastest

According to the ‘ElectroniCast Executive White Paper: Free Space Optics Global Market Forecast & Analysis (2009–2015)’, in 2009 the Europe, Middle East, Africa region (EMEA) held a slight lead in terms of relative market share in free-space optics (FSO) communication links used in non-military/aerospace applications.

However, ElectroniCast Consultants expects the American region to grab the lead later in the forecast period. The increase in the consumption of FSO links in the America region will come partly from the accelerating economic growth of major cities in Latin America, as well as an increase in communication links needed for infrastructure growth.

In addition, Asia Pacific region (APAC) is forecast to experience the fastest growth in the FSO market during the 2009–2015 forecast period. “The Asia Pacific region has advanced communication technology deployed especially in Japan, as well as strong growth potential in China, India and other countries,” says Stephen Montgomery, president of International Business at ElectroniCast.

“By a 4-to-1 margin, FSO deployments with a link length of 500m or less are out-numbering the longer-distance optical wireless links being installed in 2010,” Montgomery adds.
