5N Plus and Teck sign long-term supply agreements for Ge and In feedstock

5N Plus Inc of Montreal, Canada, a producer and provider of high-purity metals and compounds for electronic applications, says that its subsidiary Firebird Technologies Inc of Trail, British Columbia (acquired last December) has entered into long-term supply agreements with Teck Metals Ltd, a subsidiary of Teck Resources Ltd (a producer of base metals and minor metals) for germanium and indium feedstocks, which Firebird will then process further into value-added products.

The signing of the agreements follows the memorandum of understanding with Teck that was announced last December. “Supply of these critical feedstocks will provide our subsidiary Firebird with the required precursors for its value-added products, which are to include semiconductor wafers, semi-finished optics and high-purity metals and compounds,” says 5N Plus’ president & CEO Jacques L’Écuyer. “Teck is one of the most important producers of indium and germanium worldwide and we expect the stability of Firebird's supply chain to be viewed as a differentiating asset by our customers,” he adds.

5N Plus focuses on specialty high-purity metals such as tellurium, cadmium and selenium, and also produces related II-VI semiconducting compounds such as cadmium telluride (CdTe) and cadmium sulphide (CdS) as precursors for the growth of crystals for electronic applications and thin-film photovoltaic cells.
