Dow’s CIGS based Powerhouse solar shingle wins GLOBE Foundation award

Dow Chemical Company says that its new Dow Powerhouse solar shingle has received a GLOBE Foundation award for “Environmental Excellence in Emerging Technology.”

Launched in 2009, Dow’s Powerhouse solar shingle installs and performs like a standard asphalt shingle while harnessing the power of the sun to offset a portion of a home's energy usage, says the firm. Dow's Solar Solutions (DSS) technology is based on copper indium gallium diSelenide (CIGS) PV material. The unique product design has similar reveal, weight, and installation practices as an asphalt shingle. Electrical circuitry is integrated into each shingle, which are then connected by wireless plug-style connectors.

The awards are presented annually to firms that balance competitive business strategies and sustainable development. Dow’s award was presented on 23 March 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, on the eve of GLOBE 2010, an international conference and tradeshow dedicated to the business of the environment.
