Finisar to demonstrate new technologies and products at OFC

Fiber-optic communications component and subsystem maker Finisar Corp of Sunnyvale, CA, USA will demonstrate several new technologies and products at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference & Exposition and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2010) in San Diego, CA, USA (23–25 March).

A highlight of Finisar's exhibit will be the firm’s 10 Gb/s tunable C-Band XFP, a wavelength-tunable optical transceiver designed for high-volume production. Its performance exceeds many industry standard specifications, such as SONET/SDH, OTN, Ethernet, and Fiber Channel, says the firm. Providing full C-Band wavelength selection in a compact form factor, the transceiver has exceptional power dissipation margin to MSA requirements. Furthermore, it enables greater line card density, flexible provisioning to match changing bandwidth demand, decreased maintenance cost through remote configurability, and simplified inventory control.

Finisar will also demonstrate its Edge Wavelength Processor (EWP) 1x2 Wavelength Selective Switch in operation under typical network application conditions. Based on the firm’s LCoS technology, the EWP provides 1x2 / 2x1 port operation at 50/100 GHz channel spacing with broad pass-band and full 0-20 dB attenuation control without compromising 40/100 G functionality or performance. It also supports dual 50/100 GHz channel operation and channel contouring. The EWP employs advanced High Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (HTCC) hermetic packaging technology, which together with its advanced optical design, allows it to fit onto a single height card.

Three LCoS-based products from Finisar’s WaveShaper family of Programmable Optical Processors will be demonstrated. The WaveShaper family offers the capability to control both the amplitude and phase characteristics of filters and switches to simplify development and testing of high-speed optical systems at 40 and 100 Gb/s.

  • The S-Series WaveShaper, currently shipping, offers independently programmable control of the amplitude and phase characteristics of an optical filter. It provides a range of control functions, including adjustable center frequency, high extinction, programmable dispersion, and support for both narrow-band and broad-band system testing. Finisar says it is the ideal tool for DWDM system and component testing, optical pulse shaping and control, and high-speed optical research and development.
  • The M-Series WaveShaper, being shown for the first time, measures 210 x 140 x 37mm. It is designed for systems integrators who wish to utilize WaveShaper's amplitude and phase control capabilities as part of their own system or subsystem. Available as both a Programmable Optical Filter and as a four-port Programmable Optical Processor, the M-Series WaveShaper begins shipping in Q2/2010.
  • The P76 Shape Selectable Filter, also being shown for the first time, is a tunable optical filter with programmable center frequency, bandwidth and the ability to select the filter shape from a range of built-in profiles including Flat-Top, Gaussian, and Lorentzian. The P76 contains no moving parts and is controlled from its touch-screen display.

Demonstrations will take place at Finisar's booth #1613.
