40–100GE to propel Ethernet switch market to $25bn in 2015

The L2-3 Ethernet Switch market will approach $25bn in 2015, with future growth being driven primarily from sales of Ethernet switches optimized for larger data-center deployments, according to a 5-Year Forecast Report from market research firm Dell’Oro Group. By 2015, it is expected that over half the revenue in this market will be attributed to speeds greater than 1000Mbps.

“40GE and 100GE [Gigabit Ethernet] switches will be an important growth driver for the Ethernet switch market for the rest of the decade,” says director Alan Weckel. “In the outer years of our forecast, we believe 40GE will not only be used in the aggregation layer, but will begin to penetrate the server access market as well,” he adds.

Also, within the Modular segment, 40GE is anticipated to account for more then 10% of Modular revenue by 2015, reckons the report. Vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent, Arista, Avaya, Brocade, Cisco, Enterasys, Extreme, Force 10, HP, and Juniper all have current or announced Ethernet Switch offerings that are capable of supporting 40GE on Modular platforms.
