Smartphone sales grow 66% in 2010

Smartphones have exploded in 2010 as annual growth reached 66% compared to the modest 16% growth in 2009, according to Strategy Analytics in its report ‘Global Smartphone Sales Forecast by Operating System and Region’.

Starting with the number 2 handset vendor Samsung, all vendors switched gears to smartphones and started full commitment in 2010, says the market research firm. In 2011 all vendors will be competing fiercely, growing the market even further.

Smartphones will become 38% of the global market by 2015, and there will also be a major shift in power, reckons Strategy Analytics. Android will rise to number 1 sooner than expected and Apple will be trailing Symbian for the number 2 spot by 2015, it adds.
