First Solar and juwi solar sponsor road cycling team

First Solar Inc of Tempe, AZ and juwi solar Inc (JSI) of Boulder, CO are co-sponsoring a US amateur road cycling team in an effort to promote awareness for sustainable solar energy in communities throughout the country.

First Solar makes thin-film photovoltaic (PV) modules based on cadmium telluride (CdTe) as well as providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. JSI specializes in developing, designing, engineering, constructing and operating utility-scale solar energy generation facilities (1MW and larger) in North America, and has constructed three of the 10 largest PV facilities in the USA. JSI is majority-owned by German parent company juwi Holding AG, whose solar subsidiaries have built more than 1500 solar PV project around the world (totaling 700MW of installed capacity).

Based in Boulder, the juwi/First Solar Cycling Team consists of 10 elite cyclists, including two-time national champion Michael Olheiser. Team members will participate in racing events from New York to California, including the Redlands Bicycle Classic on 31 March 31 – 3 April, which will take place not far from First Solar’s proposed Stateline and Desert Sunlight solar projects. The combined capacity of these solar projects will be 850MW, enough electricity to power about 250,000 homes (displacing about 465,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 92,000 cars from the road).

“First Solar is committed to sustainable energy solutions that promote a clean, emission-free environment and is proud to partner with juwi on this sponsorship opportunity,” says TK Kallenbach, president of First Solar’s Components Business Group.
