GT wins Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Award

GT Advanced Technologies Inc of Merrimack, NH, USA (a provider of polysilicon production technology as well as sapphire and silicon crystalline growth systems and materials for the solar, LED and other specialty markets) has been named as a bronze winner in the 8th annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards, awarded annually by MassEcon (Massachusetts Alliance for Economic Development), which celebrate companies that have made an outstanding contribution to the Massachusetts economy.

The winners from each of five regions (West, Central, Southeast, Northeast, and Greater Boston) will be recognized at an awards luncheon on 22 November at the Seaport Hotel in Boston. Over 400 are expected to attend, including featured speaker Governor Deval Patrick.

MassEcon selected the winners based on job growth, facility expansion, and investment since 1 January 2010, as well as other criteria including community involvement.
GT's award was based on its recent $27m investment in its new sapphire manufacturing facility in Salem, MA. In July 2010, GT Advanced Technologies (formerly GT Solar) acquired Salem-based Crystal Systems. Since then, employment at the location has more than doubled, creating a range of employment opportunities in the State's Northeast region.

“New England is outpacing the rest of the country in economic recovery,” says Greg Bialecki, Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Development. “The Impact Awards recognize the progress that Massachusetts is making by honoring businesses such as GT Advanced Technologies that are contributing to this growth.”
