DOE announces Round 3 funding opportunity for solid-state lighting US Manufacturing Support

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a solid-state lighting (SSL) funding opportunity seeking applications for projects to advance research, development, and market adoption of SSL technology. The funding is directed toward the existing DOE SSL R&D program area for Manufacturing Research and Development, to establish the USA as a global manufacturing leader and to help create jobs in the country.

DOE is soliciting SSL manufacturing R&D projects that will achieve significant cost reductions through improvements in manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. Projects should address the technical challenges that must be overcome before prices fall to a level where SSL will become competitive with existing lighting on a first-cost basis. DOE says that, by advancing these activities, it can accelerate progress toward creating a US-led market for high-efficiency light sources that save more energy, reduce costs, and have less environmental impact than conventional light sources.

Applications for the funding opportunity are due by 15 December.

The DOE also recently announced two SSL funding opportunities directed toward existing DOE SSL R program areas for (i) Core Technology Research and (ii) Product Development (both in Round 8, with applications due on 3 November).
