Daylight Solutions awarded patent for QCL-based beam-combining technique

Daylight Solutions Inc of San Diego, CA, USA, which makes molecular detection, spectroscopic imaging and high-power illumination systems based on quantum cascade lasers (QCLs), says it has received its 16th US patent relating to its quantum cascade laser (QCL) based technology. The patent involves combining beams from individual QCL sources to create a single beam of greater combined power and/or a multiple wavelengths. The technique is valuable in a number of applications where high power or a combination of different wavelengths is necessary. One application is infrared countermeasures (IRCM), where mid-infrared lasers are used to protect aircraft from heat-seeking missiles, says the firm.

“Daylight Solutions continues to receive significant patents relevant to both our core technology and our broad range of applications. The company has now been awarded 16 patents with over 400 claims. Daylight Solutions is committed to our leadership position in QCL-based technology development, ensuring the greatest competitive advantage for our customers,” says CEO & chief technology officer Dr Timothy Day.

The firm is in discussions with several Fortune 100 companies to license its technology.
