Vitesse and JDSU demo EDC-enabled 100km-reach DWDM links with 10GBASE-ZR SFP+ transceivers

In Corporate Village room 2157 at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2012) in Los Angeles (6-8 March), Vitesse Semiconductor Corp of Camarillo, CA, USA (which designs and develops ICs for carrier and enterprise networks) is pairing its quad-channel VSC8248 electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and clock & data recovery (CDR) device with SFP+ 10GBASE-ZR DWDM modules made by JDSU of Milpitas, CA, USA to demonstrate 10Gbps DWDM links beyond 100km (exceeding the 80km standard for 10GBASE-ZR applications).

Linear modules, as opposed to limiting and re-timed modules, require robust EDC capability on the host card in order to provide link margins required for the longer reaches beyond specifications in the 10GBASE-ZR applications. As part of its FlexEQ family of adaptive equalization technologies, Vitesse says that the VSC8248 FFE/DFE EDC architecture delivers:

  • performance well in excess of the 80km ZR target, resulting in additional system margin, link distance and/or improved optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR)/chromatic dispersion tolerance; and
  • support for multiple applications at 9.9-11.3Gbps, including SONET/SDH, 10G Fibre Channel and 10G Ethernet.

These benefits contribute to an increase in system network flexibility, claims Vitesse. JDSU’s initiative to support the ZR application in the form of compact SFP+ modules means that ZR links can be achieved with what is claimed to be unprecedented front-panel port density and low power as well as minimal system cost.

“Achieving optical reaches of 80km and beyond has always been an ultimate goal for each module format,” comments Andrew Schmitt, directing analyst, optical at market research firm Infonetics. “The combination of Vitesse’s EDC and JDSU’s SFP+ ZR enables longer optical links to be achieved economically and at the highest front-panel density possible,” he adds. “This interoperability proof point should encourage wider deployment of SFP+ into DWDM applications.”

In addition to the newer ZR modules, Vitesse’s highly flexible VSC8248 quad EDC device can also serve as a host for SR, LR, ER, as well as passive copper attach applications in SFP+, QSFP and CXP module formats, enabling the design of a single universal card to supports many applications.

Vitesse’s EDC products integrate its widely deployed FlexEQ and VScope technologies. FlexEQ adaptive equalization technology reduces the cost of transmission by allowing signals to travel further, faster and error free in challenging fiber and copper applications. VScope embedded waveform technology allows confirmation of signal quality and system operation up to the SFP+ connector along with a full suite of BIST (built-in self test) functions. These capabilities accelerate the diagnostic and troubleshooting phase of new system design, allowing OEMs to bring their products to market quickly, claims Vitesse.

At OFC/NFOEC, meetings are by appointment only. JDSU is exhibiting at booth #1403. Attendees are also invited to visit Vitesse’s FTTX Ecosystem showcase. In collaboration with other firms including Hisense, D-Tech, Anritsu, Boardlight, Cyoptics, Oplink, Source Photonics and Zenko Technologies, Vitesse has organized a joint demonstration (at the Light Brigade FTTX Resource Center in booth #2747), featuring ICs, modules and system-level demos for EPON, GPON, XGPON1 and 40G WDM PON.
