Fuji Electric launches SiC hybrid power module for North American market

Power electronics manufacturer Fuji Electric has launched a silicon carbide (SiC) hybrid power module for the North American market, which allows for smaller, lighter system packages due to its higher switching speed and increased efficiency compared with full-silicon power modules. The new module began shipping to customers in April and features temperature stability and virtually no reverse recovery loss.

"The high performance and superior efficiency of the SiC module results in a reduction of total energy consumption, which in turn decreases both system costs and operating expenses over time," claims Phil Charatz, president & CEO of Fuji Electric Corp of America (a subsidiary of Japan's Fuji Electric Co Ltd). "The use of a hybrid module is an effective way to take advantage of this new technology while waiting for full silicon carbide modules to reach mass adoption," he adds.

As a 100A/1200V 6-pack SiC hybrid module, the 6MSi100VB-120-50 is suitable for a wide variety of power electronics applications, including alternative energy, medical imaging, motor drive, and UPS (uninterruptible power supply). It achieves 30% lower losses at 16kHz under standard operating conditions (a significant improvement over the performance of full-silicon modules).

"One of the benefits of migrating towards the use of silicon carbide in our products is the flexibility we have configuring the technology for a variety of products and applications," notes Charatz. "Fuji Electric's Engineering and Development teams are hard at work developing new, innovative products to support our customers' evolving needs."
