Peregrine launches full-range RF 8-bit digital phase shifter for active antenna applications

Peregrine Semiconductor Corp of San Diego, CA, USA – a fabless provider of radio-frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) – has launched the UltraCMOS PE44820, a monolithic, digitally controlled 8-bit digital phase shifter (in a 32-lead 5mm x 5mm x 0.85mm QFN package) that covers a 358.6° phase range.

Supporting a frequency range of 1.7-2.2GHz, the PE44820 is suitable for optimizing the transmission phase angle in the wireless infrastructure and radar markets, providing repeatable RF performance to applications such as antenna beam-forming, distributed antenna systems (DAS) and phased-array antennas.

"The UltraCMOS PE44820 digital phase shifter demonstrates a core capability that Peregrine is now incorporating into fully integrated solutions such as our monolithic phase and amplitude controller (MPAC) product family," says director of marketing Kinana Hussain. "This full-range digital phase shifter offers many advantages over discrete implementation. It is easy to design-in, requires little PCB space and has flexible programming."

Compared to competing solutions, the PE44820 digital phase shifter offers a fuller phase range, better phase accuracy, lower root mean square (RMS) phase and amplitude error, higher linearity and a larger temperature range, it is claimed. The PE44820 covers a phase range of 358.6° in 1.4° steps and has phase accuracy of +3°. RMS phase error is just 1° and RMS amplitude error is 0.1dB. Linearity of 60dBm IIP3 ensures that the phase shifter does not degrade the array transceiver's linearity. An integrated digital control interface supports both serial and parallel programming of the phase setting. Fabricated using Peregrine's UltraCMOS technology, the PE44820 has an extended temperature range from -40°C up to 105°C and a wide power supply range of 2.3-5.5V.

The PE44820 is also capable of extended frequency operation of 1.1-3.0GHz for narrow-band applications. An application note 'Optimizing the Phase Accuracy of the PE44820 Phase Shifter' explains this capability.

Samples, evaluation kits and volume-production parts are available now. The PE44820 is $3.75 each for 10,000-quantity orders and $3.41 for 25,000-quantity orders.
