Analog Devices launches 4-channel, 24GHz receiver downconverter

Analog Devices Inc (ADI) of Norwood, MA, USA (which provides ICs for analog and digital signal processing applications) has introduced a highly integrated, 4-channel, 24GHz receiver downconverter monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) with what is claimed to be the industry's best combination of low-noise performance, high linearity and low power consumption.

The ADF5904 integrated, multi-channel receiver downconverter achieves a 10dB noise figure (3dB better than competing devices), while using 50% less power (0.5mW), and is assembled in a small, cost-effective 5mm x 5mm 32-lead LFCSP plastic package.

Each of the device's four on-chip receive channels use a simple, single-ended connection to four individual antennas, which simplifies RF-transmission-line design and PCB layout, and reduces board size. The receiver downconverter then simultaneously handles four receive signals directly to produce a high-quality, high-amplitude baseband signal that easily connects to one of ADI's four-channel analog-to-digital converters. The ADF5904 also incorporates an integrated temperature sensor that eliminates the need for discrete sensing components that otherwise can require additional time and resources to calibrate during system assembly and test.

The ADF5904 is designed for multi-channel receiver, high-frequency applications that use digital beam forming, such as automotive ADAS, microwave radar sensors, and industrial radar systems – environments where energy efficiency is becoming a more important system-level design consideration, says the firm. The ADF5904 24GHz receiver enables these and other sensor applications by offering what is claimed to be best-in-class receive sensitivity while using less overall power than competing RF technologies.

The ADF5904 receiver costs $22.50 each (in 1000-unit quantities), while the EV-ADF5904SD2Z evaluation board costs $400.
