Qorvo launches high-efficiency power amplifiers for small-cell base-stations

Qorvo Inc of Greensboro, NC and Hillsboro, OR, USA, a provider of RF solutions for mobile, infrastructure and aerospace/defense applications, has launched a new family of power amplifiers (PAs) offering what is claimed to be industry-leading efficiency for small-cell base-station applications. Small-cell solutions add capacity to mobile networks and are a key component in improving network performance.

"As global mobile data traffic and bandwidth requirements exponentially increase, Qorvo's customers require small-cell solutions LTE advanced and heterogeneous networks," says James Klein, Qorvo's president of Infrastructure and Defense Products. "Qorvo's latest power amplifiers add to our product portfolio for the small-cell market and enable customers to improve efficiency, expand capacity, lower costs and better support carrier aggregation."

The TQP9309, TQP9321 and TQP9326 product family covers all of the major 3GPP bands, within the frequency range 700-2700MHz. Each product provides more than 27dBm output power across a wide operational range of frequencies, allowing use for multiple bands and making them suitable for different regions worldwide.

"The flexibility of the TQP93xx product family allows small-cell customers to implement multi-band support within a compact form factor," comments Earl Lum, president of EJL Wireless Research. "For small cells to be successfully deployed, they will need to be multi-band, multi-RAT and MIMO capable."

The new multi-stage PAs provide high gain in a small surface-mount package and require very few external components for operation, allowing a very compact system design. Up to 27% power-added efficiency (PAE) can be achieved at 27dBm output power, with a linearized 20MHz LTE signal to meet base-station PA requirements of -50dBc ACLR (adjacent channel level rejection, tested with a 20MHz LTE signal and linearized with DPD). The high efficiency allows for small-cell base-stations to be more suitable for Power over Ethernet (POE) applications. Qorvo's TQP93xx products are in production and available now.

Qorvo's power amplifier family is being showcased in booth 331 at the 2015 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS) in Phoenix, Arizona (18-21 May). The firm also offers an extensive portfolio of power amplifiers, low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), duplexers, filters and switches for the wireless infrastructure market.
