LED chip, lamp and lighting maker Cree Inc of Durham, NC, USA has launched the FLEX Series LED troffer, a new lighting system that gives architects and lighting specifiers design freedom to address the $1.2bn specification tier of the industry. The firm reckons that this represents an enormous opportunity for a switch to energy-efficient LEDs, as recessed fluorescent troffers comprise 50% of all luminaires used in the US commercial market, according to the Department of Energy.

The FLEX Series LED Specification troffer combines aesthetic appeal, design flexibility and premium performance into a slim luminaire design that fits virtually any ceiling type, says Cree. With five customizable inner-optic choices, architects and designers can create different environments across diverse applications – from corporate offices to hospitals, schools and retail – with just one fixture to spec. Featuring standard one percent 0-10V dimming and optional SmartCast Technology for intelligent lighting control, illumination levels are adjustable to adapt to changing conditions.

“It was specifically designed to meet the needs of architects and lighting designers,” notes Craig Atwater, senior VP & general manager, Lighting. “Every detail was designed to promote creativity and ease of specification.”

Higher-lumen packages can be mounted up to 20 feet and offer up to 6000 lumens of low-glare illumination, suitable for more light-intensive applications. By drastically reducing flicker, the FLEX Series troffer can minimize fatigue, headaches and stroboscopic hazards, and help to increase productivity and improve video telepresence applications in the office and classroom, says Cree. Together with luminous efficacy of up to 145LPW, the FLEX Series has DLC Premium status, qualifying for the largest rebates and driving fast paybacks US-wide.

The FLEX Series troffer is available to order now and is sold through Cree lighting sales channels throughout the USA and Canada.
