Avago launches first blue smart dot-matrix LED displays

Avago Technologies has expanded its line of smart dot-matrix 5 by 7 LED alphanumeric displays to include what it says are the industry's first smart displays with blue characters.

Gallium nitride provides the daylight-viewable blue (460nm dominant) wavelength. The typical brightness is 170 microcandela (ucd) per character (with all 5x7 pixels illuminated).

Housed in a thin rectangular 8-character package, the HCMS-2919 and HCMS-2976 LED displays are about the width of an AAA battery, and can be stacked vertically and horizontally for displays requiring higher character counts. The displays are driven by on-board low-power silicon CMOS ICs, and can be directly interfaced with a microprocessor, eliminating the need for cumbersome interface components. This helps to reduce design costs and makes them easy to use, claims Avago.

The displays can be used in a variety of consumer, industrial and communications applications, including remote battery-powered instruments, copy machines, printers, gaming machines, routers, audio/video applications, and test and measurement equipment.

Upgrading to a blue display is simple, says Avago, because both the ASIC and the package dimensions and pin configurations are the same as its existing AlGaAs red (637nm), high-efficiency red (627nm), orange (602nm), yellow (585nm) and green (574nm) HCMS-29xx displays.
