Handset shipments 259m in Q3; still on course for 1bn in 2006, says Strategy Analytics

Following year-on-year growth of 25% in first-quarter 2006 and 23% in the second-quarter, global handset shipments were 259m units in third-quarter 2006, says Strategy Analytics in its report 'Vendor Share: Global Handset Market Update: Q3 2006'.

In Q3/2006, all top six brands saw average selling prices decline. Sony Ericsson was the fastest-growing tier-1 brand, the most profitable, and it leapt to second position in 3G. Nokia passed 40% GSM market share for the
first time in almost two years. Motorola hung on to second position in CDMA. Among second-tier players, Sanyo and Kyocera outperformed the market, adds Strategy Analytics.

For full-year 2006, the company forecasts a total of 1bn units, up 22% on 2005's 817m.
