Aixtron brings OVPD technology to OPAL 2008 project

Aixtron is to take part in the OPAL 2008 (Organic Phosphorescent lights for Applications in the Lighting market 2008) R&D project in a consortium with Osram, Philips, BASF and Applied Materials. The project will use Aixtron’s Organic Vapor Phase Deposition (OVPD) technology platform.

OPAL 2008’s aim is to develop OLED production technology capable of achieving a target cost of a few Euro cent per cm 2 for a high performance white OLED device, with the ultimate goal of introducing the new lighting technology into the market. The specialized organic materials required will be developed by BASF, while Osram and Philips will develop the device architecture for the lighting modules and the adapted OLED processing technology.

Aixtron’s part in the project will be to improve the production capabilities of the OVPD process by designing equipment for large area deposition of OLED devices. According to Aixtron, its proprietary OVPD technology is highly suited for OLED mass production, offering low cost manufacturing, large area deposition and high flexibility in making novel multilayer devices. These are key parameters in achieving the efficiency of 50 lm/W at 1000 cd/m2 required for lighting products, say Aixtron.

Research for the project will be conducted at the Philips production site in Aachen Rothe Erde, Germany where a prototype OVPD system is already installed and operational. RWTH Aachen University will provide additional scientific support.
