Miniature PA for 802.11b/g/n WLAN applications

Microsemi Corporation has introduced a next generation 2.4GHz wireless LAN power amplifier (PA) for 802.11b/g/n WiFi client and access point applications. The LX5514 has a 2 x 2mm footprint, allowing a 55% reduction in board space over first generation 3 x 3mm devices and providing performance equal to Microsemi's LX5511 PA, says the company.

Microsemi adds that the PA’s design includes an integrated power detect function that not only saves board space but also reduces total BOM cost, and at a height of 0.46mm the product is suitable for WiFi front end modules and VoIP hand held applications.

The LX5514 is a two stage MMIC device manufactured in an advanced InGaP HBT process. With active bias and output prematching the LX5514 achieves a power gain of 28dB with a low quiescent current of 80mA. It also provides a low EVM of 3% at 20dBm OFDM output power while consuming only 150mA of total DC current.

The new PA is available for immediate sampling. In lot quantities of 10K, the unit price is $0.47.
