SemiLEDs enters profit as quarterly revenue returns to growth
For its fiscal second-quarter 2020 (ended 29 February), LED chip and component maker SemiLEDs Corp of Hsinchu, Taiwan has reported revenue of $1.537m, down 1.7% on $1.563m the prior quarter and 5.7% on $1.63m a year ago. This included shutting down manufacturing production for two weeks due to the Chinese New Year holiday.
Gross margin has improved further, from just breakeven a year ago and 33% last quarter to 36%.
Operating expenses have been cut from $1.077m last quarter to $940,000 (though still up on $917,000 a year ago).
Operating margin has improved further, from negative 56% a year ago and negative 36% last quarter to negative 26%.
Net profit was $348,000 ($0.08 per diluted share), a further improvement on losses of $317,000 ($0.09 per diluted share) last quarter and $847,000 ($0.24 per diluted share) a year ago.
During the quarter, cash and cash equivalents rose from $688,000 to $3.2m.
“We are unable to forecast revenue for the third quarter ending 31 May 2020 at this time given the uncertain impact of COVID-19 on the economy and the company,” cautions the firm.
