Lumentum launches high-power pump lasers for undersea optical applications

Lumentum Holdings Inc of San Jose, CA, USA, which makes photonics products for optical networking and lasers for industrial and consumer markets, has launched a series of 980nm single-mode pump lasers, adding to its broad family of pump lasers for optical amplification.

The new 980nm pump lasers offer significantly higher power and higher efficiency, enabling high-density erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) designs. They employ chips based on Lumentum’s field-proven, proprietary, high-reliability technology, but offer operating power levels of 250-1600mW.

“Lumentum is supporting the industry’s need for ultra-high-reliability, high-power and scalable pump lasers for pluggable EDFAs,” says Doug Alteen, senior VP, general manager, Telecom Transport.

While leveraging Lumentum’s field-proven pump technology, the 5200 Series is specifically designed for demanding undersea optical applications that require ultra-high reliability when pumping EDFAs in submarine repeaters and branching units.

“The new 5200 Series addresses the critical need to maintain extreme high reliability while providing higher power pumping,” says Xia Hong, senior director, product line management, Optical Communications. “Lumentum addresses these market needs with a design lifetime of over 25 years.”

The new uncooled laser offers increased operating power up to 800mW. Additionally, by employing new advances in chip technology and high-reliability packaging, the 5200 Series improves overall optical performance. The 5200 Series will be available in July.

The H11 Series of uncooled 3-pin low-profile planar pump laser with up to 250mW output power significantly reduces the overall pump laser size and power consumption. This laser series employs both an innovative distributed feedback (DFB) laser chip (which integrates a high-power laser and grating into a single high-reliability laser die) and an improved package design. Available in May, the H11 Series provides a noise-free, narrowband spectrum under temperature, drive current, and optical feedback changes.

The new D2 Series dual-chip 980nm pump laser provides up to 1.6W total optical output in a low-profile 14-pin butterfly package. Available in July, it also incorporates an innovative next-generation chip and semi-autonomous assembly technology, significantly improving power and density.

The new products meet the rigorous telecom industry requirements, including Telcordia GR-468-CORE for hermetic 980nm pump modules.
