SETi and Seoul Viosys develop portable surface disinfection unit
Sensor Electronics Technology Inc (SETi) of Columbia, SC, USA (which makes UV-A, UV-B and UV-C deep-ultraviolet LEDs, emitting at wavelengths of 200-430nm) and UV LED product maker Seoul Viosys Co Ltd (SVC) – both subsidiaries of South Korean LED maker Seoul Semiconductor – have developed the Photon Stand portable surface disinfection unit as a new application of Violeds UV-C LED technology.
Designed to disinfect COVID-19 occurrence areas (such as hospital rooms contaminated by infectious patients, or other locations such as schools and children’s day-care centers), Photon Stand is said to kill more than 90% of viruses and bacteria within 10 minutes. Seoul Viosys and SETi will promote both the Photon Stand surface disinfection unit for OEM manufacture as well as Violeds UV-C LED technology to medical equipment manufacturers across global markets.
Photon Stand is the latest application of Violeds technology, Seoul Viosys’ patented UV-C LED photon solution that has been demonstrated to disinfect multiple types of bacteria and viruses. Seoul Viosys’ BIO research team has confirmed that the Photon Stand disinfects more than 90% of viruses and bacteria within 10 minutes for a room up to 29.02m2, and 99% within 10 minutes for a room up to 13.84m2. The Photon Stand’s design is the result of dozens of studies of coronavirus disinfection performed by Korea University and KR Biotech. Seoul Viosys has been operating its BIO research team for more than 10 years, staffed with Ph.D. and M.S. professional researchers in the biology field.
“The cost of operating the Photon Stand disinfection unit is less than 10 cents for an area of 15m2, which is the size of negative pressure (isolation) room used for infectious patients. (Cost was simulated using Violeds’ 50,000-hour lifetime.) This represents just 2% of the cost of chemical treatments ($4) required to disinfect the same size area,” says Seoul Viosys. “The Violeds UV-C LED modules used in the Photon Stand cost less than $500, meaning that the Violeds disinfection equipment for a large area is only 10% of the cost compared to systems using mercury UV lamps. Thus, Photon Stand reduces the cost of disinfecting equipment significantly,” the firm reckons.
The portable Photon Stand can disinfect a standard hospital room within 10 minutes. (Custom designs for shorter disinfection times are also available.) Because it can be moved easily, it can disinfect various areas efficiently and requires no extra cost or specialized labor for chemical removal and cleaning, says Seoul Viosys.
In 2025, UV LED market revenue will reach $2.8bn, forecasts market research firm Yole Développement. However, if new applications such as the Photo Stand are introduced, the market will grow further, reckons Seoul Viosys.
“Chemical disinfectants used for sterilization of quarantine areas in multi-use facilities can be fatal to the human body or cause dermatitis and breathing difficulties if they are incorrectly used, or if residual substances are not properly removed after disinfection,” notes Seoul Viosys. “However, UV light leaves no residue, unlike chemical disinfectants, and it disappears without a trace. Therefore, it is suitable for a wide range of medical and multi-use facilities.”
In tests with KR Biotech (a South Korea-based research institute specializing in sterilization testing for coronavirus), Seoul Viosys has confirmed that Violeds technology disinfects 99.437% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 1 second. It has also been shown that design modifications can shorten disinfection time.
