Marktech launches silicon carbide photodiodes for deep UVC detection
Marktech Optoelectronics Inc of Latham, NY, USA, a designer and manufacturer of optoelectronics components and assemblies — including UV, visible, near-infrared (NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) emitters, detectors and indium phosphide (InP) epiwafers — has introduced silicon carbide (SiC) photodiodes designed for deep UVC detection. They exhibit visible light or solar-blind characteristics, making them suitable for monitoring 235nm and 255nm far or deep UVC LEDs.
Marktech says that its new SiC photodiodes are engineered to provide high sensitivity for accurately detecting deep UVC wavelengths. Their wavelength sensitivity range is 220-358nm, suitable for applications requiring stringent monitoring and control of UVC light sources. Their visible light or solar-blind properties ensure that they are unaffected by ambient light, allowing precise UVC measurements without interference.

The new UVC detectors are available in two hermetic package types: TO-46 metal can (MT12-001) and ATLAS hermetic surface-mount (SMD) package (MTSM1057SMF2-046).
The hermetic characteristics of the TO-can and the firm’s proprietary ATLAS package protect the compound semiconductor photodiode chip from the damaging effects of moisture, oxygen, gases and other vapors, ensuring consistent performance over a long lifetime.
Key features and benefits of the new SiC photodiodes include:
- Solar-blind characteristics: The photodiodes are insensitive to visible and solar light, ensuring accurate detection of UVC light in diverse environmental conditions.
- High sensitivity and precision: The SiC material enables exceptional sensitivity and precision in detecting deep UVC wavelengths, enhancing the effectiveness of UVC monitoring systems.
- Broad application range: Suitable for use in air and surface sterilization, water purification and analytical instrumentation, the photodiodes support various critical applications that require reliable UVC detection.
- Durability and reliability: Designed for long-term use, the SiC photodiodes offer robust performance, with high resistance to environmental degradation.
“Their ability to accurately detect 235nm and 255nm UVC wavelengths without interference from visible light positions them as a crucial component in any UVC monitoring system,” believes chief technology officer Vince Forte.
