5N+ sells AZUR subsidiary’s GaN IP portfolio to micro-LED specialist ALLOS

Specialty semiconductor and performance materials producer 5N Plus Inc (5N+) of Montreal, Québec, Canada has entered into an exclusive agreement (through its subsidiary AZUR SPACE Solar Power GmbH of Heilbronn, Germany) with ALLOS Semiconductors GmbH of Dresden, Germany — which provides 200mm and 300mm GaN-on-silicon micro-LED epiwafers, as well as licensing IP and transferring the technology — to complete the development and commercialization of a gallium nitride (GaN) IP portfolio that 5N+ has provided to ALLOS Semiconductors for a nominal value in exchange for future royalties.

Prior to becoming part of 5N+ in 2021, AZUR had acquired a package of technology and patents for high-power electronics (HPE) and radio frequency (RF) applications from ALLOS Semiconductors in 2020. This package will now be transferred back to ALLOS, along with additional GaN IP.

“This transaction allows 5N+ to focus on its core business while benefiting from the growth of the HPE market through royalties,” notes 5N+’s president & CEO Gervais Jacques. “With ALLOS, we have found the strongest possible partner to commercialize the technology over time,” he comments.

“With this acquisition we are further strengthening our IP position,” states ALLOS’ co-founder & CEO Burkhard Slischka. ALLOS specializes in 200mm and 300mm epiwafers for micro-LED applications that can be processed in standard silicon fabs. ALLOS’ customers are micro-LED and display companies, working with silicon foundries to achieve the yield and unit-cost breakthroughs that are critical to turning futuristic micro-LED display prototypes into future mass consumer products. Slischka “We remain focused on our successful micro-LED technology while exploring synergies with the rapidly growing HPE market. We are open to new partnerships in GaN HPE and our now expanded IP portfolio remains available for licensing.”
