Coherent selling epi fab in Champaign, Illinois
As part of its ongoing initiatives to optimize its manufacturing footprint, materials, networking and laser technology firm Coherent Corp of Saxonburg, PA, USA is to sell its epitaxial fabrication facility in Champaign, Illinois.
The facility was founded in 1997 as EpiWorks Inc (manufacturing epiwafers for optical components, wireless devices and high-speed communication applications) by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Micro+Nanotechnology Lab (MNTL). It was acquired in 2016 by engineered materials and optoelectronic component maker II-VI Inc, which then acquired laser manufacturer Coherent Inc of Santa Clara, CA in mid-2022 and adopted the latter’s name.
The 65,000ft2 campus in Champaign features five G3 epi systems in 15,000ft2 of Class 1000 ballroom-style cleanrooms. The fab is facilitized for up to 10 epitaxial tools and previously produced 2-inch to 6-inch indium phosphide and gallium arsenide wafers. Located six miles from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), the site comprises four buildings and a variety of fabrication and characterization equipment.
