Quintessent raises $40m in oversubscribed Series A funding round
Quintessent Inc of Santa Barbara, CA, USA — which specializes in heterogeneous integration of quantum dot lasers and silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) — has raised $40m in an oversubscribed Series A investment round led by Cycle Capital, along with new investors Goldman Sachs XIG-Industry Ventures, Hina Liberty Capital, Susquehanna International Group, InterVest, Safar Partners, and Ciena. Existing investors including Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Osage University Partners, and Sierra Ventures also participated in the round.
Also, Quintessent has begun customer sampling of its single-chip quantum dot-based DWDM comb laser– a new class of light source designed to simplify optical connectivity for rapidly scaling AI clusters.
Both funding and product milestones arrive at an inflection point for AI infrastructure. With the formation of the Open Compute Interconnect (OCI) MSA (multi-source agreement) – backed by the industry’s largest chipmakers and hyperscalers – the market has converged on wide- and-parallel dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) architectures as a leading solution for optical scale-up networks, requiring many orders of magnitude more laser sources to interconnect future AI clusters. At the same time, the massive AI infrastructure buildout has collided with a worldwide shortage of indium phosphide (InP) lasers; a light source on which almost all existing optical interconnects universally depend.
Quintessent says that it addresses both realities at once:
- The simplest way to light up a DWDM link: Quintessent’s product generates eight precisely spaced wavelengths (lambdas) from a single laser with a single bias control. No banks of individually tuned lasers, no high-power pump lasers, nor complex wavelength-control electronics are required. The result is a laser architecture designed to reduce power consumption, simplify manufacturing, improve reliability through fewer components, and enable optical connectivity that scales for AI data centers.
- A supply chain built for the AI era: Quintessent’s comb laser architecture is fabricated with gallium arsenide (GaAs) O-band quantum dot gain material – a mature, high-volume material system independent of the capacity-constrained InP supply chain – that is heterogeneously integrated on standard silicon photonics to enable high-volume, wafer-scale manufacturing.
By consolidating many lasers into one and eliminating supporting components, Quintessent’s architecture delivers what is claimed to be a step-change reduction in the cost of DWDM wavelengths, which in turn enables up to a 40% reduction in data movement power compared to ‘narrow-and-fast’ architectures. In addition, Quintessent’s design may be scaled to more (or fewer) wavelengths, and to additional CWDM wavelength bands, to enable simple bi-directional optical fiber communication with just one laser needed for each direction.
From OFC demonstration to customer sampling
Quintessent first unveiled its comb laser technology earlier this year with live demonstrations to select customers and partners at the Optical Fiber Communication conference & exhibition (OFC 2026). The firm is now announcing the start of customer sampling; currently available as an evaluation kit, allowing customers to easily integrate the laser into system test beds.
Funding comb laser maturation and new products
The investment will be used for further maturation of Quintessent’s comb laser, including sampling, reliability/qualification, and ramping up manufacturing. This is the first product in the broader roadmap of optical connectivity technologies spanning enabling components through integrated optical interconnect solutions for AI infrastructure.
Quintessent also plans to use part of the proceeds to develop other critically needed optical components - such as semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) - and to begin work on an optical engine for high reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) pluggable module interconnect applications within AI data centers.

The comb laser (QCOMB-1310-08-08-200-EVK) is currently sampling as an evaluation kit.
